Committer of the Month – Daniel Bui, Software Engineer

In our latest edition of ‘About Shardeum Team‘, we have Daniel Bui, who is also the committer for the month of April 2024.

Daniel is a first generation Vietnamese-American. In the past few years he realized his main interest has been tech which led to his fascination with Web3 and blockchain. During the pandemic, Daniel had to re-evaluate what he wanted to do in a career and switching from pre-med to coding/computer science has been the best decision he claims to have made. It has helped him meet and connect with the most encouraging and enthusiastic communities, professionals, and like-minded people in the space that has led to his new career. In Daniel’s free time, he enjoys walking around in green spaces, biking, jogging, FPS games, and messing around with random consumer tech hobbies. Recently he put together a custom keyboard!

Jereme/Will: What are you helping to build at Shardeum?

Daniel: I have been helping out with implementing new features, documenting, testing, fixing bugs on the front and backend! I’m enjoying every part of it. 2 years ago I would have not thought I’d be here. Because of talented devs on our team and LLMs, I’m learning something new everyday and helping out where I can. It’s still kind of surreal for me to see how I’m getting the opportunity to assist in the first linearly and auto-scalable blockchain at Shardeum.

Jereme/Will: What sets Shardeum apart?

Daniel: From someone who has been part of the team for a little less than a year now, there’s an understanding that what we’re working on is important to the Web3 space. The team (operations, marketing, ecosystem, developers among others) I get to work with are a fountain of knowledge and experts in the field. It’s inspiring to see a group of people working with a common goal to provide a transparent and open source infrastructure for others to build on and use. It’s refreshing to see Shardeum building in public, having live monthly streaming updates, listening to community members, and organizing in-person meetings even before the mainnet. With a community of over 1 million members already, we are ready to enable and empower the Web3 ecosystem.

Jereme/Will: How can our community members uplift Shardeum?

Daniel: First and foremost spreading the word about Shardeum to your local communities, trying out the network, and running a node! I know the Shardeum team and the community is anticipating the upcoming incentivized testnet. I am really looking forward to see the community continue to test the network, run nodes and provide valuable feedback to help strengthen Shardeum’s usability. From what I understand there has been a great stride to open source the technology here which tells you about the project’s noble vision. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced in Web3, I encourage you to become an early adopter in some shape or form. You can thank me later! 🙂

Jereme/Will: What was your journey into Web3?

Daniel: My interest in the space started in 2020 while walking my friend’s dog and listening to the ‘Crypto 101’ podcast. Learning how blockchain and smart contracts work together as the infrastructure for people to transfer digital value with no middleman was what piqued my interest. Right after the pandemic I started a job at a traditional finance firm to work my way up the ladder thinking digital assets were right around the corner. I remember the hiring manager saying that might not happen for a while but it’s a bit ironic now that they’re one of the leading firms promoting digital assets and cryptocurrency ETF’s.

After my short time there, I decided to learn to code to get into Web3 at a faster pace. This led me to meeting and connecting with as many people as I could. I started organizing a meet-up in Fort Worth, driving across DFW to meet-ups in Dallas, and joined a couple of blockchain conferences in Austin. Parallelly, I was building in public and networking on LinkedIn. Then I got lucky and received a message to set up a meeting with Omar Syed, the technical co-founder of Shardeum. From there I got to shadow the team, then intern, and now I’m a software engineer helping build with the team. I’m grateful for the experience I’m getting here at Shardeum. Especially getting to learn from the talented team that are trailblazing the path for the first auto-scalable layer 1 blockchain to provide decentralization for everyone and low fees forever.
